Owning a Tesla Model Y: trims, charging, recalls and accessories

The Model Y now comes in more versions than ever, including the longer six-seat Model Y L. They look alike from the curb, but the warranty miles and home charging speed depend on which one you pick, so it pays to know the differences before you buy.

Start here

  1. Confirm the trim, not just the badge: Standard and Premium differ in battery warranty and home charging limit.
  2. On any 2026 car, check open recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls; several need a shop visit.
  3. Put tire rotation, brake fluid tests and filter changes on your service calendar.

The 2026 lineup

Prices below were read from the tesla.com configurator for a Plano delivery address, cash view, before taxes and fees. They are prices as of October 2026 and change often.

TrimPrice (as of October 2026)EPA range
Rear-Wheel Drive (Standard)$39,990321 miles on 18-inch wheels, 303 on 19-inch
All-Wheel Drive (Standard)$41,990294 miles
Premium Rear-Wheel Drive$45,990357 miles (EPA calls it Long Range RWD)
Premium All-Wheel Drive$49,990327 miles (EPA: Long Range AWD)
Performance All-Wheel Drive$57,990306 miles
Model Y L Premium (long wheelbase, AWD)$61,990328 miles (2027, 20-inch wheels)

A few things stand out. Wheel size moves the Standard RWD's range by 18 miles, so smaller wheels are the efficient choice. The Premium RWD has the most range of any Model Y. The Model Y L is the option for families who need a third row and want to stay with a Model Y rather than an older Model X. A tow hitch rated for 3,500 lb is a $1,000 option on the standard car, and the configurator shows it included on the Performance.

EPA lists the Premium versions under their older names, Long Range RWD and Long Range AWD, so do not be thrown if a window sticker or listing uses those. If you are not sure which version you own, the car's own software screens and the Tesla app show the exact version. It matters: the trim decides your home charging setup, your battery warranty and which accessories fit.

Warranty

  • Basic Vehicle Limited Warranty: 4 years or 50,000 miles.
  • Airbags and restraints (SRS): 5 years or 60,000 miles.
  • Body rust perforation: 12 years, unlimited miles.
  • Battery and drive unit: 8 years or 100,000 miles on the Standard RWD and AWD. 8 years or 120,000 miles on the Premium RWD, Premium AWD, Performance and the Model Y L Premium Launch Series. Every version promises at least 70% capacity over the period.
  • Emissions performance warranty (2027 model year and later): 8 years or 80,000 miles on the battery charging, storage and delivery parts.

Tesla offers an optional battery extended service agreement for the Model Y, which starts when the factory battery warranty ends. Your remaining coverage is in the Tesla app under Specs & Warranty. Warranty work goes to Tesla; non-warranty work can go to any shop. See Tesla service options for how that works.

Maintenance

  • Tire rotation every 6,250 miles, or sooner if tread depths differ by 2/32 inch or more.
  • Brake fluid test every 4 years, sooner if you tow.
  • Cabin air filter every 2 years.
  • HEPA and carbon filters every 3 years, if fitted.
  • A/C desiccant: no scheduled change on the Model Y.
  • Alignment when the car pulls or wears tires unevenly, and after new tires.

Model Y cars built after February 2025 do not need brake caliper lubrication even in salt areas, and in Texas it was rarely needed anyway. The car keeps its own service record at Controls > Service > Maintenance. A heavy, quick crossover is hard on tires, so read our EV tires guide before your first replacement.

Recalls worth checking

The 2026 Model Y had a busy first year. These NHTSA campaigns involve parts or a shop visit:

  • 2026 front suspension fasteners (26V558000). Lateral link bolts may not be tight. Tesla will tighten or replace them and check alignment. Owner letters were due around October 30, 2026.
  • 2026 battery contactors (25V690000). Can cause a loss of drive power; contactors replaced.
  • 2026 reverse lights (25V658000). Wiring defect; lights and harness replaced.
  • 2026 seats (25V410000), wipers (25V359000) and horn (25V490000). Early-build issues.
  • 2025-2026 missing certification label (26V315000). A label is added. It matters at registration and resale.

Older cars have their own list:

  • 2020-2023 headlights (26V507000). Low beams can be too bright; headlights replaced.
  • 2020-2022 suspension knuckles (21V912000). Inspected and replaced as needed.
  • 2022-2023 second-row seat bolts (23V130000) and 2023 front lateral link fasteners (22V895000).

Our recall lookup lists recalls for your model year. To check whether a specific car has an open recall, enter its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. If a recall needs parts, book it in the Tesla app; it costs nothing.

Charging

Every new Model Y has the NACS port. Tesla says it adds up to 162 miles in 15 minutes at a Supercharger.

Home charging is where the trims split most clearly:

TrimMaximum home chargingRoughly
Standard RWD and AWD32 A (7.7 kW)About 30 miles of range per hour
Premium, Performance48 A (11.5 kW) on a Wall Connector with a 60 A breakerUp to 44 miles of range per hour
If you are buying a Standard Model Y, a 48 A Wall Connector will not charge it any faster than a 32 A circuit.

For a Standard trim, a NEMA 14-50 outlet with Tesla's Mobile Connector (which tops out at 32 A) already reaches the car's limit. A hardwired Wall Connector can still make sense if you want a cleaner install, plan a second EV or might upgrade later. In every case, the circuit and permit are a job for a licensed electrician. The charger planning tool and our home charging guide help you plan the conversation.

The math is forgiving: at about 30 miles of range per hour, eight hours overnight adds roughly 240 miles. If you can choose a retail electricity plan, pick one whose cheap hours match when the car charges; if your utility is city-owned, check its off-peak programs instead. The local notes in the home charging guide cover Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, Austin and San Antonio.

Buying tips

  • Confirm the trim, not just the badge. Standard and Premium look alike but differ by 20,000 battery warranty miles and by home charging speed.
  • Know the refresh. The updated Model Y arrived for 2025, and its interior parts and accessories differ from 2020-2024 cars. See accessories below, and our accessory finder sorts out fit.
  • Used 2020-2022: confirm the suspension knuckle recall. Used 2020-2023: the headlight recall.
  • Any 2026: run the VIN; several first-year recalls need a visit.
  • Towing: check that the hitch is the factory 3,500 lb unit if you plan to pull a trailer.
  • Battery Health: check it at Controls > Service > Battery Health before you sign.

Accessories worth adding

The Model Y is good out of the box. Confirm the exact model year and version before you buy anything, because fit problems are the most common reason accessories go back: 2025 and later refreshed cars use different interior parts from 2020-2024 cars.

  • All-weather floor and trunk liners. The carpet stains easily, and the frunk and sub-trunk see wet gear after spring storms. Look for raised edges and a fit specific to your model year.
  • Center console organizer. The deep bins swallow small items; a tray insert makes them usable.
  • Glass-roof sunshade. The biggest comfort upgrade in a Texas summer. See the Texas heat guide for the settings that go with it.
  • Adapters for the outlets you actually have. Tesla's Mobile Connector bundle comes with adapters for a normal 120 V outlet (NEMA 5-15) and a 240 V NEMA 14-50. Check which plug your garage, a family member's house or a lake house uses before buying anything else.

Nice to have

  • Mud flaps if you drive on gravel or on construction roads.
  • Seat-back protectors for kids.
  • A trunk cargo net or dividers.
  • A tow hitch, if you need one; check the rating (3,500 lb on the factory unit) before you shop for a trailer or bike rack.

Usually skip

  • Touchscreen screen protectors: Tesla's owner's manual cautions against them (phantom touches, static damage, not covered by warranty).
  • Cosmetic carbon-look trim that peels in heat.
  • Cheap wheel covers that rattle or fly off at highway speed.
Before you buy accessories: our accessory finder builds a short list for your car, and the tint preview shows what legal Texas tint looks like before you visit a shop.
